The urban center of Bergamo is made up of two distinct areas called the upper city, the encompassing part the historic center surrounded by walls and the part called the lower city which represents the modern nucleus.
 
Together with Ferrara, Lucca and Grosseto, the city of Bergamo still has the historic center completely surrounded by walls maintaining its original appearance intact over the centuries.

For connections and transport, Bergamo it is surrounded on three sides from the west, south and east by a system of ring roads, connected to the motorway, from which direct provincial and state roads depart furthermore towards the valleys and the capitals of the neighboring provinces the A4 motorway, which connects it to Milan and Brescia, allows quick and easy connections with other urban centres.
Trains leave from the train station for Milan, via Treviglio and via Carnate, for Brescia, for Lecco, for Cremona and for Seregno.
From Orio al Serio Airport frequent flights depart to numerous Italian and European cities.
 
The Province of Bergamo overall covers an area of 2,722.80 square kilometers with 244 municipal subdivisions, it borders to the north with the province of Sondrio, to the west with the provinces of Lecco, Milan, Monza and Brianza, to the south with the province of Cremona and to the east with the province of Brescia.
 
The northern part of the province of Bergamo it is essentially mountainous, occupies approximately 64% of the surface, in this area there are the main Bergamo valleys such as: Val Brembana, Val Seriana and Val Cavallina, Valle Imagna, Val di Scalve and Val Serina. The main rivers are the Oglio to the east, the Adda to the west, the Brembo with its tributaries Imagna and Enna and the Serio which flows into the Adda in the Crema area, the Cherio, the Borlezza and the Dezzo which flows into the Val di Scalve. In the province of Bergamo there are two main lakes, Lake Iseo and Lake Endine.
