The origins of the island of Corfu date back to around 600 BC. C. when the island of thanks to
maritime trade entered history as the colony of Corinth. During the Persian Wars
it allied several times to Athens and its strategic position in the Adriatic Sea made it become
a very coveted destination for enemy peoples. Romans, Normans, Swabians and Angevins dominated the island in
different periods. The Venetians conquered it in the 14th century, followed by the French army with
Napoleon and finally the British. In 1864,
finally, at the behest of its inhabitants, it became the territory of Greece.

FLIGHTS
Corfu airport 'Ioannis Kapodistrias' is located about 2 km from the capital, there are frequent flights
from Athens and Thessaloniki.
By sea, the island is also served by the Italy-Greece route of many shipping companies, both Greek and Italian.
From Patras and Igoumenitsa there is a dense network of ferries and hydrofoils.
