Two centuries after the inauguration
in 1808, in the spring of 2009 the Theatre
Sociale has been reopened to the public
with a rich program of shows and
the intervention of great artists. An immense restoration activity has been carried out
possible the recovery of this authentic
jewel designed by the architect
Leopoldo Pollack, student of Piermarini,
also famous for construction
of the Arco della pace in Milan and of
Royal Villa in Monza.
In the past Pollack, with a
initiative of some nobles established in
company, used
an area occupied by part of the Palace
of the Venetian Podestà was destroyed by a
fire.
The new social theatre, capable of hosting around 1300
seats, with 88 boxes arranged in three rows and
a gallery was elegantly decorated
by local artists such as Bonomini and Querena.
in particular the
season of the Social Theatre had an interesting outcome
for a few decades then, it entered into competition
with the Riccardi theater the current Donizetti,
favored by its location
on the piano, went into decline.
However, the Social Theater came
also used for opera performances
to 1929.
Following collapses resulting in limited hopes of recovery
In the
after the Second World War the Social Theater came
permanently closed.
Currently thanks to the excellent restoration it has been possible
recover the original
theatrical function in Bergamo Alta.
