The name of south america was attributed by the cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Martin Waldseemüller in 1507 after Amerigo Vespucci suggested that the newly discovered continent was not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans. The continent is located entirely in the Western Hemisphere and partly in the Southern Hemisphere, except for some regions located north of the Equator in the Northern Hemisphere. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east. North America and the Caribbean Sea are located to the northwest.
Geography

Several unique animal species are found in South America, including llamas, anacondas, piranhas, jaguars, vicunas, and tapirs. The forests of the Amazon, however, have a high level of biodiversity. By far the largest country, both in terms of area and population, it is Brazil, followed by Argentina.
Climate
Due to the amplitude of the latitude that occupies the continent, a variety of climates exist on the territory. The hot humid one of the Amazon rainforest, the cold dry one of Patagonia, the arid one of the Atacama desert, the icy windy one of Tierra del Fuego. We also consider that most of it lies between the equator in the northern part and the Tropic of Capricorn, while the southern tip penetrates a subarctic region. Among the other factors that determine climate variations, we also mention the difference in temperature between the two oceans. Generally the coast exposed to the Atlantic is warmer and the one facing the Pacific is colder due to the presence of the Humboldt current. The presence of the Andes, whose temperature varies considerably according to the altitude.
